DESCRIPTION:What To Expect:\nPlease note: You are not yet signed up for this opportunity. This page is to indicate interest only. To actually sign-up you must email or call “L” at lnmenyuk@bcps.k12.md.us or 301-580-5421 \nOutdoor\, farm-based field trips for K-5th grade take place Tu\, Th\, & F\, 9a-1p\, mid March to early June and after labor day to Thanksgiving. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 1 field trip per week for 2 months or more- and must arrive between by 9am on field trip days. Students learn about plants\, animals\, and nutrition\, as they participate in hands-on activities in our greenhouses\, fields\, barn\, kitchen\, trails\, and stream. \nBasic Volunteer qualifications: \nAble to stand and walk around outdoor grassy terrain with students over the course of a few hours.\nLove working with young students\, and able to communicate with them respectfully and effectively to help us manage field trip groups.\nInterested in the outdoors\, food and farming – no prior skills or knowledge needed.\nOpen to learning and training.\nField Trip Volunteer tasks: \nHelp set-up and clean-up stations and lunch areas. Help prep fruit and vegetables for tastings.\nAssist lead educators with group management\, student engagement and answering questions about the farm\, its plants\, animals and ecology.\nSkilled volunteers may be asked to co-lead our volunteer-led station\nEngage students in conversation questions and tastings and help students properly recycle and compost over lunch\nTreat students with respect\, kindly redirect behavior if needed\, and be a role model.\nWe have occasional events\, such as the spring summit and family farm days at which regular volunteers would be welcome in addition to specialists such as chefs\, nutritionists\, master gardeners\, master naturalists\, etc – and we’ll be working with different ages and groups. \nAll volunteer inquiries go to farm to school specialist\, “L” (Laura) Menyuk – lnmenyuk@bcps.k12.md.us or 301- 580- 5421 \n
