Local Hiring – Workforce Development

The local community has several ways to access employment opportunities with the University of Maryland. You can directly apply to the websites below or visit the UMB Community and Workforce Engagement Center (Workforce Wednesday, 2 to 6 p.m.). Our Westside Baltimore neighbors are eligible for the Southwest Partnership Anchor Institution Community Referral program. This program positions qualified candidates, who apply for jobs at UMB, UMMC, and the University Physicians, Inc., to get an interview. Residents in the following zip codes are eligible for this program: 21201, 21215, 21216, 21217, 21223, 21229, and 21230.

There are three ways to access employment opportunities at the University if you have the skills to qualify for one of our current vacancies. Please review our listings:

However, if you want to enhance your work readiness skills, get resume assistance, sharpen your interviewing abilities, get help with an online application, and/or want a variety of wrap around services, visit us or one of our community partners.

Workforce Wednesdays

Every Wednesday at the UMB Community Engagement Center, staff and volunteers meet with community members about getting connected with jobs and career training. To date, more than 150 community members have sought online job search assistance, online job application assistance, and resume writing and review. Through a collaboration with the Mayor’s Office for Employment Development, Workforce Wednesday participants get an opportunity to meet with the Southwest Works Career Navigator and get registered in the Maryland Workforce Exchange. This gives community members access to online training, assessment and job opportunity.

For our neighbors on the Westside of Baltimore, they are eligible for the Southwest Partnership Anchor Institution Community Referral program. This program positions qualified candidates, who apply, for jobs at UMB, UMMC, and the University Physicians, Inc. to have an interview.  Residents in the following zip codes are eligible for this program: 21201, 21215, 21216, 21217, 21223, 21229, and 21230. Community organizations such as Paul’s Place, the Baltimore Housing Authority’s PACE program, and Second Chance regularly refer their clients to this program.

Local Purchasing – Economic Development

Consumer
Support the economy of neighboring communities in West Baltimore with your purchasing power. Please support our neighborhood businesses by using them for your next catering job or simply by visiting them for lunch, Local Food Businesses. For UMB employees ordering for business purposes, the vendors listed on our Local Food site can all take your pro card!

Merchant/Vendor
Hire local workers, improve local properties, and make food available to community members. Local small businesses receive access to training, technical assistance, marketing support, and other resources to help them succeed in selling food. Funded by the Baltimore Integration Partnership, the program originated as a joint project of the School of Social Work’s Community Action Network.
