Supporting Education and Youth Development

Our approach is a simple, three-prong strategy – we will support education and youth development through school partnerships, mentor programs, and by introducing youth to health care and bioscience.

School Partnerships

The Partnership with West Baltimore, in alignment with the Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS) community schools model, is partnering with three schools in West Baltimore:

  • James McHenry Elementary/Middle School
  • Samuel Coleridge Taylor Elementary School
  • Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy

We are working closely with these schools to serve as a hub for community life by offering a range of support and services for students and their families, which include the following:

  • School supplies and uniforms
  • Laundry facilities
  • Field trips
  • Personal hygiene kits
  • Back-to-school health events
  • Career day sponsorships
  • Workforce development and employment opportunities for parents
  • Professional development speaker series
  • School trauma violence and injury prevention programs
  • Internship opportunities
Back to School Health Fair

UMMC and UMB will sponsor its first joint Back-to-School Health Fair in late August 2017 to benefit James McHenry and Samuel Coleridge Taylor Elementary Schools. The health fair will offer health screenings for children and parents as well health information, school supplies, and immunizations for children attending both schools. A specific date and time will be determined soon in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office and the Baltimore City Health Department.

Health Care and Bioscience Mentorship Opportunities

UMB CURE Scholars Program
The UMB CURE Scholars Program is a groundbreaking program that prepares sixth- to 12th-grade students in Baltimore for competitive, lucrative, and rewarding research and health care careers at UMB and other health institutions in the region.

Project SEARCH
Project Search is a one-year academic and internship program for Baltimore City high school seniors with disabilities, helping them learn employable skills. This program is a model in workforce and career development for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. For more information, see the UMB and UMMC sites.

YouthWorks
YouthWorks helps prepare our future workforce for successful careers by matching older teens’ career interests with training in effective work behaviors and financial literacy. Our unique feature of pairing students and mentors one-on-one gives students a better idea of what it is like to work in a professional setting. For more information, see the UMB and UMMC sites.
